National Cathedral School (NCS) announces a search for a long term substitute Lower School (grades 4-6) Spanish teacher. The position is a leave replacement that begins February 20 and concludes June 9, 2016. The candidate will teach 2 sections of Spanish for each grade level and have some additional responsibilities such as a daily lunch table duty and rotating recess and dismissal duty.
Qualified candidates hold a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred), have relevant teaching experience and are native speakers of Spanish. The lower school Spanish program introduces students to the fundamentals of Spanish vocabulary, grammar, and syntax, while fostering the skills required for foreign language study. The NCS Spanish program focuses on developing students’ oral proficiency and cultural awareness, enabling students to communicate effectively in real-life contexts with other Spanish speakers. The successful candidate is knowledgeable about Spanish cultures (ideally from direct experience living abroad); has significant teaching experience at the elementary/middle school level; is oriented toward an oral proficiency model; demonstrates mastery of a varied, creative array of pedagogical approaches; and has the ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds. The school day is from 7:45 a.m. through about 3:45 p.m. Substitutes are paid only for days worked; federal and school holidays are unpaid.
