Building on a long-held belief in the essential coexistence of high-level, competitive athletics and the connection between physical and emotional wellness for all students, Friends’ Central School seeks to hire its first Director of Athletics & Wellness (“DAW”). The DAW will lead the FCS community in its pursuit of excellence within these distinct, yet interrelated, realms.
The Friends’ Central School athletic program is a top Independent School program in the Philadelphia area - a leading program in the Friends Schools League (FSL) and Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA). The DAW will enhance and improve the quality of Friends’ Central’s teams, understanding that the culture of the athletic program is an extension of the School’s Quaker values. Hiring and mentoring coaches who are both highly skilled and interested in sportsmanship and character development will be a key aspect of this leadership role. At Friends’ Central, student-athletes and coaches understand that academics come first and that being a student at FCS is their first responsibility.
At the same time, the DAW will establish a school-wide, mission-driven wellness program, including nutrition education, health, and fitness for life in Nursery through grade 12. This program will connect across Friends’ Central’s curriculum, working in conjunction with the health education program and in collaboration with the support services team. Graduating students who understand the impact of healthy habits and physical fitness on living successful and full lives will be an essential aspect of the DAW’s role.
The DAW reports to the Head of School and sits on the Head’s Core Administrative Team. The DAW will lead a team and program that includes more than 60 coaches, an aquatics program, an athletic trainer, and assistants in athletics and physical education and wellness. The DAW will lead regular meetings with a team of direct reports and conduct annual evaluations of those reports.
The DAW’s Office is responsible for communicating and promoting the goals and objectives of the FCS Athletics and Wellness programs, while overseeing a robust budget. The DAW’s Office schedules, attends, and coordinates logistics for athletic events (e.g. transportation, hiring officials, crowd oversight, etc.).
The DAW works with each division of FCS, ensuring internal consistency and scope and sequence in the School’s physical education and health curriculum. The DAW supports the work of the Admission Office, represents the School at related meetings, and ensures fulfillment of all Friends Schools League requirements. The DAW plans awards nights and collaborates with coaches and the College Counseling Office to support student-athletes who seek to participate in athletics at the college level.
