Menlo School is seeking a middle-school Mathematics full-time substitute. The position begins in January 2017. A strong candidate would feel comfortable organizing instruction to help students develop strong proportional reasoning skills, and flexible understandings of operations on rational numbers. We are particularly looking for a candidate who is deeply invested in helping middle schoolers see mathematics as a subject full of meaning and interconnected ideas, rather than as a class in which they memorize rules and practice routines. We seek an educator who hopes to help students develop strong mathematical intuitions and excellent habits of mind for studying mathematics.
In our hiring process, we look for teachers who:
actively encourage multiple methodologies for tackling and solving problems, and discuss the benefits of certain strategies over others as a vehicle for becoming a more savvy mathematical thinker,
promote thoughtful mathematical discourse in the classroom,
are willing to allow student interests, questions, and misconceptions to affect daily curricular decisions,
differentiate instruction for a range of student abilities,
invest in the life of the school by actively participating in Advocacy, clubs, and faculty committees,
are willing to collaborate on projects and skills with other grade-level core teachers,
are willing to help cultivate and hone an aligned 6-8 Mathematics curriculum with the department,
share our commitment to cultivating an ever more heterogeneous and inclusive community.
