The Stanley Clark School, the premier independent Preschool-Grade 8 co-educational day school in South Bend, Indiana, seeks a Middle School Head to begin July 1, 2017. Founded in 1958, SCS enrolls around 300 students with approximately 140 students in middle school, grades 5-8. The school enjoys the well-deserved reputation as the best school in the region for strong academic preparation, robust opportunities in the arts and athletics, and an emphasis on character education and service learning. Stanley Clark alumni disproportionately become the area’s high school valedictorians, salutatorians and community leaders.
The ideal candidate will have relevant teaching and administrative experience, preferably in an independent school, an understanding of the developmental needs of middle school students, the experience and credentials to serve as the academic leader of the middle school division, superior verbal and written communication skills, impeccable follow-through, comfort with technology and innovation, and an ability to attend to both daily operational details and high level needs simultaneously. Skill at advocating for the middle school division while considering the school’s needs as a whole is required.
The Middle School Head reports directly to the Head of School. He or she must be highly attuned to the needs of students, parents and faculty while maintaining the requisite objectivity to make sound decisions. He or she must enjoy working collaboratively with other members of the administrative team, involvement in a wide range of student activities, and appreciate a family atmosphere with high expectations.
The Middle School Head must be at ease with students and adults alike and, most importantly, have an abundance of common sense, good humor and sound judgment.
Responsibilities encompass all aspects of middle school life including, but not limited to, leading and inspiring an exceptional faculty, maintaining a culture of accountability and respect in a nurturing environment, envisioning and implementing enhancements and improvements in collaborative, inclusive ways and embracing the mission and philosophy of the school as the foundation for all decisions.
