POSITION OVERVIEW AND RESPONSIBILITIES
With a reputation as one of the top high school orchestra programs in the Bay Area, Menlo School is searching for an engaging teacher to build and strengthen our existing program. This teacher will have a unique opportunity to develop a relationship with world class musicians through Music@Menlo, an internationally acclaimed chamber music festival and institute which features immersive programming for emerging and pre-professional musicians. The Orchestral/Instrument teacher will inherit a marquee program in the School’s Upper School Creative Arts Department. Students seek out this program each year and value it for its high quality and strong sense of community. This robust program is a significant draw to many prospective students and their families.
Responsibilities will include conducting and leading the Upper School Chamber Orchestra along with leading an additional high school instrumental music program, which may focus on jazz, rock, ethnomusicology, show or band music. Duties include teaching a potential of three or four music sections or the equivalent, based on the needs of Menlo’s music program. Other responsibilities include coaching the Middle School Chamber Ensemble providing a welcoming environment for students of all levels to progress in their musical learning and ensemble skills. Depending on the mix of courses taught, additional upper school duties may include serving as an advocate, teaching music appreciation, conducting the school musicals, and student coaching. The candidate will have the leeway to envision a vibrant instrumental music program in both the upper and middle school and will be an important contributor in fostering the arts culture at Menlo as well as nurturing a healthy relationship with Music@Menlo. The candidate’s responsibilities will include preparing students to perform several concert performances annually as well as lead extracurricular offerings - such as community performances, special events, orchestra trips or tours. In this position, the teacher will be given the opportunity to create inspired arrangements and should be comfortable with a wide range of repertoire in the classical, pop, rock, show and jazz traditions.
All of Menlo’s arts and music classes are held in the new 40,000 square foot Creative Arts and Design Center, complete with three large music rooms fully equipped for instrumental and vocal music.
