Isidore Newman School seeks a talented classroom teacher and educational leader to serve as chair of the mathematics department. Qualified applicants will have a degree in mathematics or a related field and substantial teaching experience and demonstrated academic leadership in independent schools. Newman seeks an academic leader who values strong relationships with students and colleagues while maintaining high expectations for academic work and faculty performance. The ideal candidate will have broad teaching experience in a variety of math content areas and an advanced degree. A desire to be an active member of the school community is also required.
An advanced degree in math or related field is preferred for this position.
The successful applicant will possess: excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills; strong instructional and classroom management skills; experience with academic leadership; the ability to effectively coach and provide feedback to fellow math faculty; an abiding interest in helping students to experience academic and social growth; be successful in working with teams and supervisors; be willing to contribute to school activities outside of the assigned classroom.
Facilitate the educational and social development of the students.
Create an environment of respect and rapport that is safe and conducive to learning with strong pedagogical and content knowledge for four sections of math.
Coordinate and oversee the development and implementation of the mathematics curriculum and all departmental activities for grades 6 12
Collaborate with Lower School mathematics instructors and coaches to ensure alignment of learning targets across all divisions
Assist the division heads and the Assistant Head of School in supervising and evaluating all middle and upper school mathematics department members to ensure quality and effective instruction
Support department members in the further development of their craft
Assist the division heads in the hiring process as necessary
Serve on the Upper School Academic Council to coordinate and oversee the Upper School academic program
Serve as an advisor to a small group of students
Collaborate positively with all faculty especially other academic leadership across the School.
Continue to grow professionally by attending in-service and professional development/training opportunities in and outside of the school.
Communicate openly and effectively with parents including but not limited to Parents Night, and Parent Teacher Conferences.
