Tabor Academy is expanding its College Counseling office by hiring an Associate Director of College Counseling. We are seeking an experienced college counseling professional to help provide energy, vision and leadership to an evolving program in support of our students and families. In providing organized and energetic support of students, the Associate Director will guide a percentage of the junior and senior classes in their college search; monitor the progress and completion of each advisee's applications; and participate fully in the daily operation of all activities (including travel to colleges and conferences) required to sustain and advance a productive, innovative, and dynamic college advising program. It is essential that this person is able to work effectively, independently, and as part of a tightly knit and highly skilled team. S/he must be able to handle confidential materials with discretion. The successful candidate will also serve as a dorm parent with related duties and coach (or the equivalent) for one season in the afternoon program. This position includes housing.
Provide strategic leadership, vision, and direction in support of the college counseling program
Guide members of each graduating class through the transition to post-secondary education, including writing letters of recommendation and overseeing the submission of application materials
Educate students and parents about colleges, the admission selection process, and emerging trends in the industry
Meet with students on an ongoing basis to compile high quality applications and recommend an appropriate list of colleges for consideration
Foster and maintain strong relationships with college admission representatives; meet with representatives who choose to visit Tabor’s campus and visit college campuses to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relations with staff in college admission offices
Pursue professional development opportunities, including attending and presenting at national and regional conferences
Possess excellent interpersonal communication (writing, presenting, listening) and organizational skills, and the ability to interact and work effectively with students, parents, faculty and other employees with tact and professionalism
Convey patience, empathy, enthusiasm, and good humor in their work
Enjoy collaborating with colleagues within and across all areas and aspects of school life
Possess a high degree of cultural competency and demonstrated experience working with diverse populations
Invest in the community and participate in the lives of our students outside the realm of college counseling
Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree, with a Master’s degree in a related field preferred, along with 5-10 years of experience in either college counseling in an independent school setting or as an admission representative in a selective college admission office.
