National Cathedral School announces a search for a Lower School Librarian. This 10-month staff position begins August 2017. The Lower School Librarian will oversee the Lower School Library, which serves students in Grades 4, 5 and 6. The successful candidate is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about information-literacy skills, understands trends in 21st-century libraries, fosters a love of reading, has teaching experience, creates a warm and inviting library space for all, and supports innovation throughout the curriculum. Knowledge of independent schools, as well as an understanding of the pedagogy of an all-girls school, are desirable. Qualified candidates hold a bachelor's degree; a master's degree in library science or Reading is preferred. The Lower School Librarian should have a strong commitment to responsive and innovative services to faculty and students and good communication skills.
The Lower School Librarian will promote a culture of reading through a variety of methods that may include arranging author speakers, reading contests, and attractive bulletin boards and displays; collaboration with faculty to integrate 21st-century information-literacy skills into the curriculum; instructing students on a weekly basis in library skills; overseeing all aspects of a parent volunteer program in the library; and providing reference services for students, faculty, and staff. The Lower School Librarian will collaborate with the Head Librarian in acquisitions to meet the curricular needs of students and faculty and manage the library budget. In addition, the Lower School Librarian will integrate technology effectively in the library program through lesson plans, online databases, and library databases.
