Riverdale’s Department of Music is seeking an enthusiastic, collegial and knowledgeable bassist/bass teacher to help develop technique and musical understanding in Middle and Upper School bass students. The position will be a sabbatical leave replacement for the 2017-2018 academic school year.
The position will involve teaching sections of 6th and 7th grade bass classes, coaching the orchestra bass section, and possibly coaching bassists in other large ensembles as needed. The willingness to make basic repairs is useful, as is wide familiarity with orchestra repertoire. Creating musical arrangements for the Middle School students concerts using a music notation computer application is crucial, as is the ability to simplify difficult passages in orchestra parts for some players. Managing the school’s bass inventory for home and school use is also part of the position. Having in-depth professional experience as a bassist is highly useful and inspiring to students of all ages.
Also, the ability to teach cello technique will make a candidate especially attractive.
All candidates for Riverdale teaching positions should demonstrate an interest in engaging students in an environment that is both supportive and rigorous and will participate in community activities including advising groups, service opportunities, or other co-curricular activities. Our Middle School and Upper School are located together on the Hill Campus, so candidates who demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching across the divisions are especially attractive. A brief solo audition will be required. A Bachelor's degree is required; Master's and Doctoral degree holders will receive additional consideration, as will those with previous teaching and performance experience. Riverdale is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Interested and qualified candidates should apply by sending an email to the Chair of the Department of Music at email@example.com.
