The Academic Dean has overall responsibility for the delivery of the academic mission of the school, ensuring that curriculum and course offerings - both on and off campus - align with the mission of the school, allow for a breadth of offering, and prepare students for their ultimate transition to college and life after Proctor. In this role, the Academic Dean will oversee the Department Head’s meetings, coordinating with the Administrative Team, Departments Heads, the Dean of Faculty, and ancillary groups to define both short and long-term focus. The Academic Dean will reference and work towards implementation of goals determined by strategic planning and the different academic departments. This position requires an individual who has demonstrated the capacity to look beyond the immediate horizon of the Proctor community and who has an interest in, and awareness of, the larger educational landscape. The Academic Dean will have direct reports, including but not limited to the school’s librarians, Technology Integrator, and the school’s registrar. They will also be responsible, along with the DOF, for providing feedback and evaluations to Department Heads.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as a member of the Administrative Team and participate actively in weekly meetings. Additionally, attend trustee meetings and functions as requested, be a significant presence on campus, spectate at games and performances, attend meals, serve as an Administrator on Duty, and be recognized as an engaged member of the community.
Work with individual Department Heads to assess course offerings to ensure alignment with the mission of the school and the Profile of a Proctor Graduate.
Oversee new course proposal process, ensuring that any new offering is vetted prior to presentation to Department Heads and potential budget implications are thoroughly understood. Establish minimal enrollment numbers and ensure that all course descriptions are filed and available.
Oversee the School’s academic record keeping, ensuring Official Notes deadlines are met, creating an exam schedule and tracking changes, ensuring adequate class days for curriculum.
Participate in Project Period, Senior Project, Off-campus curriculum review, and Wellness committee meetings.
Screen applications for Admissions as needed and ensure that all new students are placed in courses and at levels appropriate for their profile.
Chair or co-chair a small group of forward thinkers to assess opportunities outside of Proctor’s immediate community that may enrich faculty, teaching practices, or the learning environment for students. This group functions on both the tactical and strategic level and additionally will have responsibility for two to three professional days over the course of the year. The Dean of Faculty is a standing member, chair or co-chair on this committee.
Conduct annual review of direct reports in accordance with HR policies.
Perform other duties as assigned by the HOS.
