The Shipley School, founded in 1894, is a co-educational, college preparatory, independent day school currently enrolling 835 students in grades Pre-K through 12. Located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, the school is committed to educational excellence and dedicated to developing in each student a love of learning and a compassionate participation in the world. The Upper School has 378 students in grades 9-12, and a faculty of 60.
The Shipley Upper School seeks an experienced high school English teacher. The candidate will have a degree in literature and a clear educational philosophy consistent with the mission of the school. Experience teaching English literature and/or writing at the high school level is preferred.
Reports To: Department Chair and Division Head
The teacher reports to his or her department chair
Creates a supportive atmosphere and rigorous academic program in which all students will thrive
Works collaboratively with department members
Advises students and attends faculty meetings
Provides positive, frequent communication with colleagues, administration and families
A clear educational philosophy, consistent with the mission of the school
Experience teaching English at the high school level
Degree in literature; M.A. in English or M.Ed. in Secondary Education preferred
Must possess a creative, energetic, and positive approach to teaching and learning
Must have a true passion for literature and be an avid reader
