Primary Responsibility: To serve as an active member of the school's administrative team, contributing to the overall strength and effectiveness of the entire school. To assist the Head of School in the daily running of the school and to be responsible for the supervision and coordination of all Middle School activities.
Classification: Exempt; 12-month employee
1. Set the overall tone for focused work and joyful engagement in the Middle School.
2. Inspire faculty and student commitment to Hamlin’s mission, Creed, and strategic goals.
3. Infrastructure and Oversight
Creates, coordinates, and communicates annual Middle School schedule
Adjusts daily schedule when needed; oversees calendar of assemblies and events
Evaluates and approves field trips
Approves official letters from faculty to parents as well as letters of recommendation for Grade 8
Partners with Head of School on official correspondence regarding matters of significance
Works in partnership with Director of Admission and Head of School to oversee admissions
Works in partnership with High School Counselor and Head of School to support the high school admissions process
Works in partnership with Outdoor Education Coordinator to ensure safety and coordination of outdoor trips with academic calendar
4. Faculty Excellence
Initiates hiring process and partners with Head of School in vetting and hiring of new faculty
Supports entry and transition of teachers new to the school
Observes classes formally and informally
Evaluates a cohort of faculty annually and meets with all faculty for the purpose of goal-setting
Encourages professional growth and supports faculty in their growth and renewal plans
Plans and facilitates meaningful division meetings
Reviews and approves professional development requests in partnership with the Standing Committee on Program Excellence (SCOPE)
Facilitates meetings for special groups, grade-level advisors, student-support services
Assigns faculty to grade-level advisory teams
Selects and supervises four Grade Level Coordinators
Works with faculty coach to support new teachers and to conduct peer observations
5. Instructional Leadership and Curriculum Oversight
Monitors, tracks, and communicates student progress (i.e. GPA, ERB’s, SSAT’s)
Recommends and approves tutoring, testing, and psycho-educational evaluations
Coordinates the arts elective program in partnership with arts teachers
Monitors and evaluates curriculum in conjunction with Head of School and SCOPE
Reviews all texts considered for purchase in conjunction with Head of School and SCOPE
Reviews and analyzes ERB data to inform curriculum and instruction
Reviews curriculum guide and grid in partnership with Lower School division head
Serves as a member of SCOPE
Stays attuned to best practices in Middle School education and adolescent development
6. Student Life
Builds a culture of ethical behavior and sets the tone for a positive community founded on the Hamlin Creed
Reviews annual assignments of students to advisors
Works with Student Council to plan weekly assemblies and oversee annual election
Oversees discipline in the Middle School
Works in partnership with Director of Athletics to ensure program excellence
Facilitates guest speakers for Health and Wellness classes or academic classes
Partners with students on matters of significance to them; appoints student leaders as needed
7. Parent Relations/Parent Education
Maintains an accessible, open door to families of students
Plans and leads grade-level parent orientations before school resumes each fall
Oversees Middle School Curriculum Night
Hosts grade-level coffees throughout the year to strengthen communication and partnership
Meets with parents as needed regarding academic and social progress of students
Follows learning services protocol and, as needed, makes appropriate recommendations for support services
Partners with Head of School, School Counselor, and parents to manage student crises
Attends relevant school functions (i.e. fall and spring fundraisers, donor stewardship events)
Engages regularly in public speaking
Assists in screening of applicants and serves as a member of the Admissions Committee
Makes recommendations regarding the admissibility of applicants
Authors, reviews, and edits admissions materials pertinent to Middle School life
Attends admissions events on weekdays and selected weekends
9. Financial Management
Oversees and manages the Middle School budget in close partnership with the Director of Finance and Operations
Anticipates needs for Middle School and communicates them in a timely way
10. Crisis Management
Serves as Acting Head of School upon the request of the Head of School
Serves as a member of the Crisis Management Team, understanding safety guidelines and emergency protocols as outlined in the Safety Handbook
Qualifications and Qualities for the Middle School Division Head
Thorough knowledge of theory and practice for Grades 5-8 curriculum as well as experience and creativity in curricular design and implementation. Within the next 3 years, strategic planning and the CAIS accreditation will be important aspects of school life.
Strong interest in and knowledge about the social, emotional, and intellectual development of girls.
Experience with effective professional development initiatives; ability to evaluate, affirm, and support experienced, professional teachers.
Cultural competency and the ability to build and sustain a cohesive and inclusive school community; thoughtful knowledge and practice in multicultural and diversity issues.
Confident, thoughtful, and reflective leadership skills; skilled in the process of collaborative decision-making and team-building.
Highly developed organizational skills.
Successful experience as a Middle School teacher; an advanced degree.
Caring listener, compassionate presence, with a great sense of humor and a big heart.
