The Lower School Math Specialist is a part-time position reporting to the Director of Lower School supporting teachers in implementing the Investigations curriculum and differentiating instruction in the classroom to reach a broad range of learners. The Lower School Math Specialist will partner with classroom teachers to refine and extend learning experiences, assess student learning, and communicate with parents about the math program.
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Modeling various strategies for differentiating instruction to reach both students who need extra support and those who need extra challenge
Providing small-group mathematical instruction to students
Providing teachers with anecdotal, written notes from classroom observations and instructional time
Planning and implementing a “Math Night” or speaker for families to learn more about the Lower School math program (alternating years)
Meeting with grade level teams to discuss math and analyze student work
Sitting on the Curriculum Council as representative of Lower School for math
Providing teachers with additional resources for intervention, extension and home activities
Order and track inventory of math program materials (workbooks, teacher guides, etc)
Coordinating with Investigations math consultant or other specialists
General duties and contributions to the life of the school
The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of children’s academic, social, and emotional development; knowledge of the TERC Investigations math program and Responsive Classroom; familiarity with authentic assessment practices and current technology; passionate and knowledgeable about progressive math education and differentiation. Candidates should have a proven record of collaborative teamwork, excellent communication and organizational skills, and passion for working with K-4 students.
BA required, MA/teaching credential preferred; strong background and knowledge of elementary school math; ability to work well with a range of children; ability to work well with a team; comfort in communicating with parents; energy, flexibility, and creativity.
