Middle School Outdoor Specialist Opportunity
Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle, is currently recruiting for outdoor specialists to co-lead trips for 6th and/or 7th grade Middle School students which will occur in Spring 2017.
Together with their assigned Lakeside Middle School faculty member, the Outdoor Specialist will be responsible for providing students with the opportunities to:
- Develop a sense of place in the Pacific Northwest:
- Learn how to contribute as members of teams;
- Take physical, emotional, and social risks;
- Learn the fundamentals of ‘wilderness’ backpacking and camping and leave no trace protocols; and
- Practice problem solving.
The trips are planned as follows:
- 6th Grade (Prep day Tuesday May 23, Trip Wednesday May 24 – Friday May 26, 2017)
- 7th Grade (Prep day Monday May 15, Trip Tuesday May 16 – Friday May 19, 2017)
- Prior to each trip there will be several short preparatory meetings with students (during school hours).
Attendance at these meetings is encouraged but not required for Outdoor Specialists. Additionally, as noted above, there will be one full day (8am-4pm) of prep time scheduled for each trip. These prep days will be one day prior to each trip and attendance is required for all Outdoors Specialists. There may be optional post trip day available for outdoor specialists to work on gear.
Requirements and Qualifications
Successful candidates must be at least 21 years of age; have experience leading multi-day wilderness expeditions working with middle school age children; and possess current Wilderness First Aid & CPR certifications (WFR preferred). Additionally, candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
Compensation and Benefits
Outdoor Specialists will receive a stipend of $130/day (US funds).
