MS or US Science Teacher/Department Head
BFS anticipates the possibility of an opening for an MS or US Science Teacher/K-12 Science Department Head. This position entails serving as department head, teaching three science classes, and serving as a student advisor. We seek candidates with department head or other academic administrative role experience and/or experience in curriculum design, mentoring and observation of teachers, and exposure to IB curriculum. The K-12 science department is composed of approximately 10 science teachers.
As the department’s needs change according to the student population, course assignments may change from year to year. This position requires a science teacher that is capable of, and comfortable with, teaching students of a diverse range of backgrounds, age, maturity and ability levels. The ideal candidate will have a commensurate amount of science and/or science education coursework in several areas of science, as this position requires a candidate with knowledge of and the ability to teach in two or more areas of the discipline. Candidates must have experience teaching a laboratory science course, and the willingness and flexibility to teach multiple areas of science to multiple grade levels. A Master’s degree in a lab science or in science education is required. A working understanding of Science Inquiry methods will allow the candidate to fit the science instruction model that is currently in place at BFS. A comfort level with current classroom wi-fi internet technology is expected.
All Brooklyn Friends teachers are expected to be active community members, sharing supervisory duties and general support and care of the school community. Advisory responsibilities include overseeing students' progress in all classes, being the primary contact with parents, and other responsibilities such as participating in overnight trips, teaching our anti-bias curriculum, and leading service learning activities.
