The College Preparatory School
Instrumental Music Teacher
Beginning fall semester, 2017
The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time Instrumental Music teacher interested in shaping and overseeing our instrumental music program beginning in the fall (mid-August) of 2017. Candidates should have experience teaching all of the usual Orchestra and Jazz Band instruments, including guitar, as well as experience teaching at the high school level. The person selected will teach some combination of Orchestra, Jazz Band, Chamber Music and a Beginning Instruments class. College Prep is a community of life-long learning and actively encourages and supports the professional development of all of its members.
Our Instrumental teacher, in collaboration with colleagues from the Arts Department, is responsible for producing concerts featuring student musicians: the evening Fall, Spring, Arts and Chamber Music Concerts; a number of lunch concerts; and either the biennial musical drama production or Music Tour. In addition, full-time teachers take a share of other departmental and general school responsibilities such as advisor for a group of students, chaperone duties and Intraterm. Teachers thrive at College Prep when they partake in the opportunities offered by a rich co-curricular program and a tightly knit school that embraces equity and inclusiveness, and actively seeks to strengthen its ties to the greater Oakland community. The salary is competitive. Benefits include medical and dental coverage, a retirement plan for eligible employees, and most pleasantly and collegially, a prepared lunch every day.
The College Prep Arts Department is unique, innovative and rigorous. We offer a variety of courses in the Visual, Musical, Vocal, Dance and Dramatic Arts. Other than in Orchestra and Jazz Band, student enrollment in our classes is kept low in order to maximize student participation and engagement. Students are required to take a minimum of two years of arts courses for graduation; the majority takes more. The Arts Department actively cultivates and enjoys a culture of innovative collaboration and collegiality among its members and students.
