The Learning Specialist reports to the Head of Middle School and the Head of Upper School and works closely with faculty and the administrative team in both divisions. The Learning Specialist supports middle and upper school students with learning strategies, organization, and study skills; provides individual instruction as appropriate; and serves as a resource for faculty.
This is a new position at The Harvey School, so the Learning Specialist will need to collaborate with the leadership team in developing an effective learning support framework for the school.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one and small-group support/instruction for students, both in push-in and pull-out environments.
Make regular assessments of student achievement and progress.
Report regularly on student achievement and progress.
Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences to discuss pupil progress with parents, if required.
Meet with individual parents as necessary to discuss the progress of their children.
Read and summarize all Psych-Ed evaluations for Middle and Upper School and for Admissions as necessary.
Assist with the writing of individual learning plans (ILPs) that will target pupils’ specific curricular/learning needs.
Counsel families on learning support and assessment accommodations.
Support teaching staff by offering resources, assistance, advice, and training to enable faculty to better meet the needs of all learners.
Develop and maintain communication and documentation protocols related to learning support.
Assume an active role in Student Support Team (SST) meetings.
Coordinate detailed testing of students by outside specialists.
Organize and oversee standardized testing at Harvey in concert with the Registrar and College Office.
Coordinate the use of external tutors and learning specialists.
Act as the liaison with local school districts and attend CSE meetings as appropriate.
Perform other duties as determined by the Head of School.
Bachelor’s degree in special education or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
At least four years of experience as a learning specialist or in a related role. Independent school experience preferred.
Familiarity with legal responsibilities of independent schools related to IEP and 504 plans.
Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, admin, and parents.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.
Positive attitude, flexible approach, and a sense of humor.
