Fifth Grade Teacher
Starting August 2017
The Fifth Grade Head Classroom Teacher plans and implements the math, language arts, and history and geography curricula, as well as our school wide programs at the fifth grade level in character education, sexuality, equity and justice, sustainability, and peace and nonviolence. The Head Teacher oversees the overall educational experience of each child, monitors progress and works cooperatively with colleagues, parents and any outside providers of service to advance each child’s best interests. The Head Teacher also mentors two Interns over the course of the year—one for each semester.
Our Head Teachers are responsible for setting a classroom tone of mutual respect, care, joy, and inclusivity. The Head Teacher communicates regularly with parents through the formal structure of conferences and reports and through the use of email, phone calls, conferences, and personal conversations as needed.
The Fifth Grade Head Teacher is also responsible for overseeing the fifth graders’ participation in our leadership-training program, and guiding the class to a special presentation to the school at graduation. The Fifth Grade Teacher is also responsible for training the students in the organizational skills they need to complete long-term projects.
Candidates must be prepared to lead the class on an overnight in the fall at the Science Museum. Outstanding oral and written communications skills, command of the value-added use of classroom technology and commitment to the values and principles of the school are a must. Experience with the workshop model of teaching is preferred, and deep experience with upper elementary students is required.
