The College Preparatory School
Full-Time Teaching Position
Beginning fall semester 2017
The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a dynamic and innovative history teacher beginning in the fall (mid-August) of 2017. Candidates should have a minimum of three to five years experience teaching history to students at the secondary or college level. They should have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community and be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment. College Prep is a community of life-long learning and actively encourages and supports the professional development of all of its members.
Full-time teachers teach four classes. Sections average 16 students. The College Prep history program is unique, innovative and rigorous, and includes three required year-long courses: Asian Worlds (in the 9th grade), Atlantic Worlds (in the 10th grade) and United States and the World (in the 11th grade). Beyond required courses, the vast majority of our students choose to take one or more electives, including such titles as Linguistics, Economics, The Politics of Protest and U.S History since 1945. History teachers work closely with one another as teams for particular courses and across the curriculum.
Candidates should be eager to spend additional time getting to know and help students outside of the classroom. In addition to their classroom responsibilities, College Prep teachers take a share of other departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities, most of them during the 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. school day. Teachers thrive at College Prep when they partake in the opportunities offered by a rich co-curricular program and a tightly knit school that embraces equity and inclusiveness, and actively seeks to strengthen its ties to the greater Oakland community. The salary is competitive. Benefits include medical and dental coverage, a retirement plan for eligible employees, and most pleasantly and collegially, a prepared lunch every day.
