Breakwater School seeks an experienced, creative and collaborative preschool teacher to join its dedicated Early Childhood team. This is a full-time salaried co-teaching position, academic year with the option to start during our summer program.

Position Overview: Breakwater is seeking an experienced Early Childhood Teacher to care for and teach preschool age children in a developmentally responsive program through play-based, emergent curriculum rooted in a celebration of the natural world and in accordance with Breakwater's mission, core beliefs, and teaching model (please see our website at Breakwaterlearning.org). Qualifications required to teach effectively in our program include knowledge of best practices in preschool education, understanding of current research in child development, and familiarity with the principles of an emergent curriculum model, Candidates must possess the skills to engage children in their own process of learning, and the ability to earn student’s trust and attention. Candidates should be able to effectively collaborate with early childhood colleagues and to be a participating member of our toddler - eighth-grade faculty community.

A spokesperson within and outside of Breakwater who embodies and articulates the preschool program's goals, curriculum, and benefits to children, to the school, and to the Portland area community.
Teaches children ages 3-5 in a play-based, emergent curriculum inspired by the best practices of Reggio Emilia and grounded in intentional, integrated and researched based teaching.
Create and maintain a clean and tidy classroom consistent with health and safety standards.
With co-teacher, plans and maintains daily schedule and routine.
Works with the Academic Director, Early Childhood Coordinator and early childhood faculty to ensure optimum learning for each student and to cultivate a kind, welcoming, and vital classroom community.
Works with the Academic Director, Early Childhood Coordinator and early childhood faculty to vision, execute, evaluate and revise curriculum and corresponding student assessment tools for a play-based, collaborative, and emergent preschool program based on Breakwater's principles teaching model.
Works with the Academic Director, Early Childhood Coordinator and early childhood faculty to articulate the preschool program within the Early Childhood Division and on the continuum of grades at Breakwater in support of the whole school community.
Demonstrates skilled and timely oral and written communication with parents, children, co-workers and supervisor.
Articulates a personal working early childhood education philosophy in alignment with Breakwater mission, principles and teaching model.
Demonstrates ability to learn and teach in response to individual children's needs and developmentally appropriate best practices.
Works with the Head of School, Academic Director, Early Childhood Coordinator, and faculty to communicate, support and model Breakwater's mission, core beliefs, principles and the Breakwater Way
Able to lift 40 pounds, haul or drag up to 25 pounds, sit, stand, squat, and otherwise get down on the level of children
Establishes work patterns and relationships within Breakwater that are sustainable, productive, mutually respectful and supportive, in service to children and families.
Qualifications and Experience:
Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field - Master's Degree Preferred
3-5 years lead preschool teaching experience
Preschool teaching experience in at least one of the following settings preferred: Reggio Emilia inspired, Montessori, and/or nature-based preschool program
Experience with one or more of the following is desired: school gardens, early childhood art, music, movement, nature studies, science, tinkering, woodworking
Water safety, CPR and First Aid preferred; not required at time of hire
Supervision and Support:
This position reports to the Academic Director and Early Childhood Coordinator; training and support provided as needed to meet the needs of the program and children
