Middle School Math Teacher, Full-time, beginning August 2017
The math program in Burke’s Upper School (5th-8th grade) emphasizes the development of mathematical understanding from visual representation to abstract ideas. These essential questions guide students’ learning in math:
How can we use math to model our world and create solutions to real-life problems?
How can we support our solutions with mathematical evidence?
How can we represent mathematical idea in different ways?
How does looking at patterns help us to think mathematically?
Teaching four sections of middle-school math, likely to include one section each of sixth grade (Primary Mathematics), seventh grade (Dimensions), and eighth grade Algebra and a second section of one of those grades and/or supporting in fifth grade (Primary Mathematics) class. Fifth and sixth grade classes meet daily for 50-minute periods; seventh and eighth grade classes meet five out of six days in our six-day rotation.
Advising a group of 11-12 sixth, seventh or eighth graders; meeting daily for brief homeroom period and twice weekly for longer advisory group discussions; supporting advisees in student-led parent conferences and accompanying advisees on outdoor education trip
Supervisory duties and extra-help periods
Using assessment to drive and support learning
Reporting in writing on student progress
Partnering and communicating effectively with parents
Participation in regular meetings of grade-level advising team and Upper School Math Department
Establishing and nurturing an inclusive classroom culture that supports the development of students’ cultural competency
Differentiating instruction to support a range of learners
Using technology to support and transform teaching and learning
Demonstrating commitment to ongoing professional development

At least two years' experience teaching math to middle school students
Teaching credential, National Board Certification, or advanced degree
Experience teaching Singapore Math and algebra
Experience with Developmental Designs philosophy and techniques
