The Director of Physical Plant is responsible for oversight of the school’s physical plant, including maintenance of all buildings, grounds, athletic fields, vehicles and other equipment. The Director will supervise the department managers, and will provide operational, logistical, and hands-on support to the school in all matters relating to the maintenance and operation of the physical plant
Plan, direct and supervise physical plant services, including personnel, campus operating systems, maintenance, repairs and improvements, grounds, and housekeeping services.
Manage, mentor, train, and evaluate full- and part-time staff of approximately 40 employees.
Manage operating budget, capital budget, and renovation projects to ensure that operations and projects are cost-effective, completed in a timely and accurate manner, and are on budget.
Work with architects, construction managers, engineers, and consultants for construction projects.
Ensure compliance with applicable local, state and federal building codes and regulations.
Develop, update, and execute a 5-year preventive maintenance strategic plan.
Develop and manage relationships with third-party suppliers and contractors, including negotiating contracts.
Focus on energy conservation programs, and other sustainable strategies and techniques.
Support the school’s residential facilities and be available for emergencies and scheduled “off-hour” work as needed.
Bachelor’s degree in Construction/Project/Facilities Management, Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, related degree, or equivalent combination of work experience (specialty in a trade) & training.
A minimum of ten years relevant experience as a senior facilities manager in a complex multi-building facility. Experience at an independent school, college, or university is preferred
Be a strong leader with excellent interpersonal skills and extensive experience managing a diverse staff.
Be customer service oriented with a proven ability to build relationships.
Have project management experience, including large renovation and construction projects.
Possess extensive knowledge of building codes, blueprints, safety and environmental regulations, and sustainability.
Be a strategic thinker with detailed knowledge of financial planning, budgeting and scheduling.
Have a demonstrated ability to prioritize and complete projects and assignments.
Be comfortable with technology, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Be willing to work flexible hours and as needed, including evening/weekend hours (must be on-call 24 hours/day).
Be an excellent communicator with a positive attitude and a good sense of humor.
