El Segundo, CA
High School Life Planning (College Counseling) Associate and Teacher
Vistamar School is a college preparatory, co-educational, independent day school that serves a very diverse population of students in grades 9-12, supported by a generous program of Moderated Tuition. Approximately 35% of our students participate in our Moderated Tuition program, and approximately 50% of our students identify as students of color.. As described in our mission statement, we seek to attract a faculty and student body who bring diversity of thought and culture to our school community, and who will be committed to ensuring that we provide an inclusive environment for the respectful exchange of multiple perspectives.
Since our opening in 2005, enrollment has grown steadily to 280 students, who are drawn from over 50 different middle schools and over 35 different zip codes in greater Los Angeles. We will add faculty and classrooms incrementally as we approach our target enrollment of 300.
Vistamar is located in the eastern-most section of El Segundo. The school is close to major freeway interchanges and is well serviced by public transportation, including a commuter rail station.
Both tuition and salaries are competitive with other Los Angeles- area independent schools. Vistamar is fully accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and holds institutional memberships in the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Council of International Schools (CIS).
Overview of the Position
Life Planning is a distinctive aspect of the Vistamar experience. It is grounded in our belief that high school should help prepare students for happy, productive, and successful lives. It should arm them with the tools they will need to do meaningful work, be engaged with their communities, and sustain fulfilling relationships with others.
College planning at Vistamar is intentionally embedded in this broader context of Life Planning for our students. While a great deal of hype about college admissions focuses on “getting in,” we remind students that college is an important next step in a larger life plan. Our students apply to college using a lens beyond merely that 4-year experience. The goal is for students to find and choose a school in which they can thrive and excel, a school that will effectively position them for fulfillment in the worlds of work, community, and relationships. We are seeking a new member of our Life Planning team, who will collaborate with the three other Life Planners to work with students at all grade levels. During the fall, the Life Planners’ major responsibility is to work with their caseload of approximately 18 seniors on their applications to college and/or gap year plans. During the rest of the school year, Life Planners are responsible for developing relationships with younger students, counseling them on coursework, summer work and internships, and when appropriate, standardized test prep and other college planning. It is expected that the new Life Planner also will teach one or two classes, which will be determined based on expertise and interest. Additional duties include assisting with student activities, and active participation in admissions and development events.
Ideal candidates will have a minimum of 3 years of college counseling experience and at least 5 years of teaching experience at the high school level, and deep experience working with racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse students and their families. Ideal candidates also will possess a thorough knowledge of college financial aid systems and scholarships, and strong existing relationships with a wide variety of colleges and universities. Deep knowledge of the subject matter that will be taught, and familiarity with student-centered approaches to teaching also are essential. A master’s degree and teaching credential are preferred. In addition, we are looking for a genuine colleague - a thoughtful, energetic, passionate educator and all-around "school person" who wants to participate in and contribute to our vibrant community. A love of high school students, flexibility, and a sense of humor are required.
