K-8 Drama and Movement Teacher

Open Window School seeks a creative, dynamic, and experienced K-8 Drama and Movement Teacher for the 2017-2018 school-year. Preference will be given to candidates who have three or more years of relevant teaching experience, a valid State of Washington teaching certificate, and background working in independent schools.
This position involves teaching kindergarten through eighth grade classes. Other responsibilities include participation in weekly department and faculty meetings, offering after school enrichment opportunities, and attendance at some evening and overnight activities.
A successful candidate will be able to inspire bright students with a creative and innovative curriculum. An understanding of and appreciation for the developmental needs of students is essential. Class sizes are typically limited to 16-20 students.
Movement classes are taught to students in kindergarten and first grade and meet two times per week for 25 minutes per session. Classes focus on basic locomotor skills, awareness of personal versus shared space, running, throwing, and catching.
Lower school drama classes in kindergarten through fourth grade meet weekly with an emphasis on creative movement and expression, understanding of dramatic elements, and verbal and non-verbal performance. In addition to drama classes, the drama teacher coordinates closely with homeroom teachers and music teacher on each grade’s annual performance. Responsibilities include selection and adaption of scripts, set design, and direction.
Middle school drama classes for grades five through eight are part of an arts elective program. This provides the teacher with an opportunity to develop specific and unique curriculum focused on students of high interest. Classes with groupings of fifth/sixth and seventh/eighth grade students meet one day per week on a trimester basis. Examples of classes include: Fighting with Shakespeare, Film making, Improvisation, Painless Play writing, and Technical Theater. As part of the elective program, students may choose to perform in a grade 5-6 fall play or 7-8 spring musical under the direction of the drama teacher. Specific roles are cast based on auditions, but all students who sign up are included in the performance.
Open Window School is the only Seattle-area Eastside independent school dedicated to meeting the needs of gifted children. We provide a nurturing, stimulating environment where children are supported emotionally and socially as well as intellectually and academically. Total K-8 enrollment is currently 320 students.
Open Window School teachers enjoy a competitive salary based on the Bellevue Public School District. This position is eligible for full-time benefits, including school provided medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage. The school is not easily accessible by public transportation.
