Georgetown Day School seeks a full time Visual Arts teacher for the 2017-2018 School year to teach a full range of courses across the Lower/Middle School. Designed to develop the student’s ability to approach creative experiences with self-confidence, the Lower/Middle School visual arts program introduces students to a broad assortment of media and techniques. Concepts are presented to make students more sensitive to the aesthetic qualities of their environment and to provide a rich source of experience upon which they can draw. Teachers work hard to maintain a balance between providing formal instruction and giving students opportunities for free, creative expression. A consistent approach to working in the studio, including the proper use of materials and instruction in specific techniques, ensures that all students gain a common frame of reference. All students work with paints, a wide range of drawing materials, found objects, clay, papier-mâché, and printmaking materials. Rich content, creative pedagogy and authentic relationships are essential components of a GDS classroom. The ability to provide those elements, work collaboratively with colleagues, and place children’s interests and experiences at the heart of the classroom are essential components of teaching at GDS.
As a diverse, inclusive school devoted to social justice and preparing our students to live and work in an increasingly globalized and multicultural society, GDS is particularly interested in professionals with demonstrated interest and experience in working in such a school setting.
