THE POSITION: Hawken School is seeking a full-time Humanities Teacher in the Upper School (Grades 9-12) for the 2017-18 school year. The essential duties/responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Teach four sections of upper school 9th grade Humanities
Design and teach 11th and 12th grade English or history seminars in future years
Design and develop curriculum with a team of Humanities teachers
Engage meaningfully in extracurricular activities
Advise a group of 8-10 students, overseeing their academic and social growth
Perform other non-teaching duties as assigned by the Assistant Head of School for the Gates Mills Campus or Head of School
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess demonstrated competence and experience in the content area and best pedagogical practices. A Bachelor of Arts degree is required and a masters’ degree is preferred. We seek candidates who are excited to teach courses with substantive experiential and service components, and who have a keen interest in bringing appropriate innovative technologies into their classrooms. The candidate for this position could expect to teach primarily 9th grade Humanities, with an opportunity to develop 11th and 12th grade History or English seminars in the future. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary teaching, as well as an active interest in designing courses that take advantage of longer teaching blocks and our 3- week intensive schedule. Candidates should be willing to engage in substantial team work associated with such course design. We seek a candidate with a healthy combination of flexibility, energy, creativity, and sense of humor, as well as an understanding of the developmental needs of adolescents. Ideal candidates will have strong cross-cultural competency skills and demonstrated experience working in a diverse community.
