THE POSITION: Hawken School is seeking an upper school Science fellow for the 2017-2018 school year. Our fellowship program offers teachers who are new to teaching the opportunity to learn the craft of teaching in an exciting, forward-focused environment. Fellows plan and teach their own classes in collaboration with mentors and participate in our vibrant school community by coaching or advising student activities. We especially value energy, intellectual enthusiasm, and a commitment to building meaningful relationships with students. The essential duties/responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Work closely with a mentor teacher to learn and experience first-hand the best innovative practices relevant to teaching high school Biology and Chemistry
Partner with a lead teacher for 1 section of upper school science and have direct responsibility for 1-2 additional sections
Engage meaningfully in extracurricular activities
Partner with an advisor to oversee the academic and social growth of 8-10 advisees
Perform other non-teaching duties as assigned by the Assistant Head or Head of School
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a BA in a related discipline and a deep interest in a career in education. Preference will be given to those with the ability to teach both Biology and Chemistry and have a keen interest in learning and implementing appropriate innovative technologies for the classroom. Interest and experience with coding is also desirable. We seek a candidate with a healthy combination of flexibility, energy, creativity, and sense of humor, as well as an understanding of the developmental needs of adolescents. Ideal candidates will have strong cross-cultural competency skills and demonstrated experience working in a diverse community.
