For 50 years, The Gateway School has transformed the lives of children who have experienced academic difficulty as a result of a language-based learning disability (dyslexia, reading and writing disorders), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), executive function disorder, visual-spatial or auditory processing difficulties, and/or gross and fine motor coordination issues. Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Gateway enrolls over 150 students between the ages of 5-14 in a Lower School and Middle School. In small classes with a low student-to-teacher ratio, faculty and therapists meet students where they are, individualize instruction accordingly, and develop them into skilled, strategic, independent learners who are capable of advocating for themselves and who are prepared to transition into mainstream school and life.

The Head Teacher develops, implements and assesses the efficacy of instruction in all subjects for a class of 9-10 students. Founded in 1965, The Gateway Schools’ greatest strength remains our belief in the ability of every student to learn. An independent, coeducational, day school, The Gateway Schools teach students with language based learning disabilities and or attention deficit the skills, strategies and content necessary for them to realize their potential in school and in life. In a small and nurturing setting..., students experience academic success, recognize their strengths and develop self-advocacy skills. They transition to mainstream school settings when it is clear they can do so successfully.
Today, The Gateway Schools are located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in close proximity to Lincoln Center in the borough’s first LEED (“Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design”) certified school building. We enroll 145 students in two divisions: an ungraded Lower School for fifty-seven students ages five through ten and a Middle School for seventy-eight students ages ten to fourteen in grades 5th through 8th.
In the design of our curriculum and our selection of instructional approaches, Gateway takes all aspects of a student’s development into consideration, in particular how language affects his thinking, feeling and learning. An independent school curriculum weaves together the skills and strategies necessary for learning with the academic content required for successful participation in general classrooms including college preparatory high schools.
