Shawnigan Lake School is one of the world’s pre-eminent independent boarding schools with a rich Canadian heritage of outstanding co-educational, university preparatory, boarding education. Situated on a beautiful 300 acre campus on Vancouver Island, Shawnigan offers an exceptional learning environment and world-class facilities, inspiring around 500 students yearly in the pursuit of excellence academically and holistically across a wide-range of athletic, artistic and cultural endeavours.
The Board of Governors is now seeking a full-time, permanent school leader to be the next Head and bring inspirational and experienced leadership to Shawnigan from July 2018.
The Head reports to the Chair of the Board of Governors and is accountable for the delivery of first-class education and outstanding pastoral care. Key responsibilities include the following:
Vision and Strategic Leadership
Work with the stakeholders to develop a compelling vision and strategy for Shawnigan as a world-class learning institution.
To strengthen further Shawnigan’s identity as Canada’s leading boarding school with a clear focus on the provision of a first-class educational experience that balances academics, community, sport and the Arts.
To provide clear, inspirational academic leadership ensuring Shawnigan students of all abilities are supported and challenged to realize their full potential.
Engage academic staff in re-setting the academic agenda of the School and ensuring we are well-prepared to benefit from the planned curriculum changes in British Columbia.
People and Financial Management
To attract, develop, motivate, retain and lead academic and administrative staff and actively develop a pool of emerging leaders with a view to succession planning.
To ensure the financial independence of the School through effective financial and resource management.
To build connectivity for Shawnigan at a local, provincial, national and international level, developing links and partnerships which benefit the School and its students.
To champion Shawnigan’s distinctive ethos and commitment to a complete education and deliver the highest standards of pastoral care, ensuring that the welfare, social, moral and personal development of students is at the heart of all decision-making within the School.
To ensure an inclusive culture at all levels of the School, where students thrive and where leadership development and opportunities are championed for all genders across staff and faculty.
The next Head of Shawnigan Lake School will be a leader of exceptional calibre who will demonstrate the following experience, skills, knowledge and personal attributes:
Experience and Education
A first-class educator with an evidenced track record of highly successful senior leadership – ideally, but not necessarily gained – through experience of the opportunities, challenges and demands of senior management in a boarding school.
At minimum an undergraduate degree, but with an advanced degree such as a Master’s or PhD being an asset.
Proven experience of leading, developing and motivating high calibre teams with a clear commitment to the continuing professional development of all colleagues.
Demonstrable success in managing strong relationships with a range of different stakeholders, effectively balancing different needs and priorities.
Strong academic and intellectual credentials to command the respect of staff, pupils, parents and the wider Shawnigan community.
Skills and Knowledge
A collaborative approach to decision-making with the skills to meaningfully engage the broad Shawnigan community in the development of the School in this next period.
First class communication and interpersonal skills with high levels of emotional intelligence.
Wide-ranging educational interests, an appetite for innovation and a broad understanding of cutting edge practice.
A broad understanding of the rapidly evolving education landscape, for instance within British Columbia, Canada and globally and the opportunities and challenges this presents for Shawnigan.
High levels of cultural sensitivity and the flexibility to rapidly understand and assimilate to the School, and if coming from abroad, to the British Columbian and/or wider Canadian contexts.
A strong understanding of the business aspects of school leadership and a clear grasp of the importance of fundraising and development activity in modern headship.

Additional Salary Information: The salary range for this position will be $300,000 to $400,000, based on skills and experience. This position will also include medical, dental and life insurance coverage; executive residence on campus; vehicle; tuition subsidy for school age dependents; professional club membership and pension contribution.
