The Post Oak School's next College Guidance Counselor will be an ambitious and dedicated self-starter who is happy, team oriented, and prepared to work with top-notch faculty and talented students. The new counselor will have the opportunity to be creative and build on an existing strong program. This work begins with exceptional communication and close relationships with college admissions representatives and Post Oak families alike. The top candidate will be well-connected with, and respected by, college admission personnel. The counselor must be an extremely strong writer who can make students come to life through the letters of recommendation. The counselor will balance the interests and ambitions of both students and parents and, above all else, help them to understand the importance of a strong match with the right school.

Represent and advocate for each student in their college admission process with various colleges and universities
Determine a strategic timeline for the college counseling process on a grades 9-12 continuum that ensures both appropriate guidance for students and families as well as achievement of matriculation goals
Meet with each student in grade 9-12 one on one at least each semester; more frequently during the 11th and 12th grades
Establish appropriately high aspirations for college matriculation in support of strategic goals
Develop and execute action plans for communication with and education of students and families
Establish and carry out plans to advocate for students in the application process
Steward existing relationships with colleges and build new ones that further matriculation goals
Track relevant data and outcomes related to matriculation goals and student success in college utilizing Naviance Family Connection
Publish information to students and families in all relevant grades regarding all aspects of the college matriculation process and standardized testing
Inform students about and help them apply for relevant scholarships
Coordinate of the application process and meeting of deadlines for students and families, as well as faculty working on supporting materials
Oversee the running of Naviance Family Connection
Oversee the administration of appropriate standardized tests (PSAT/NMSQT)
Coordinate college representative visits (over 100 annually)
Maintain College Connection Blog (published at least monthly)
Run and distribute matriculation and scholarship reports to administrative team each month
Support and attend Post Oak events outside of the college counseling program, e.g., admissions open houses
A Masters' Degree (preferred)
Previous experience in college admissions or counseling
Knowledge of a wide range of universities
Experience teaching or working in an independent, private, college preparatory, or like-kind school setting
Exceptional public speaking, writing, organization, and communication skills
Ability to perform well under pressure and to meet deadlines
Experience interacting with young adults and their families, school administration, and college admissions offices
Ability to read people well, communicate clearly and firmly, and exercise both discretion and transparency
Sensitivity, openness, and approachability
Strong references that convey your college counseling abilities
Skills, talents, and flexibility for contributing to the independent school community in additional capacities. For example: Coaching sports, advising extracurricular activities, supervising school trips, etc.
