El Segundo, CA
High School Math Teacher
Vistamar School is a college preparatory, co-educational, independent day school that serves a very diverse population of students in grades 9-12, supported by a generous program of Moderated Tuition. Approximately 35% of our students participate in our Moderated Tuition program, and approximately 50% of our students identify as students of color. As described in our mission statement, we seek to attract a faculty and student body who bring diversity of thought and culture to our school community, and who will be committed to ensuring that we provide an inclusive environment for the respectful exchange of multiple perspectives.
Since our opening in 2005, enrollment has grown steadily to 280 students, who are drawn from over 50 different middle schools and over 35 different zip codes in greater Los Angeles. We will add faculty and classrooms incrementally as we approach our target enrollment of 300.
Vistamar is located in the eastern-most section of El Segundo. The school is close to major freeway interchanges and is well serviced by public transportation, including a commuter rail station.
Both tuition and salaries are competitive with other Los Angeles- area independent schools. Vistamar is fully accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and holds institutional memberships in the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Council of International Schools (CIS).
Overview of the Position
Our math program emphasizes mathematics as a language, integration with the science curriculum, and use of the graphing calculator at all levels. We take an integrated approach to algebra and geometry, which is based on the problem sets developed at Phillips Exeter Academy as the core of the program through Pre-calculus. These problems are carefully sequenced, encourage alternative solutions, and support a high level of mathematical thinking and discourse among the students. At the upper level, we offer AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC. We also offer a discrete math course entitled Advanced Topics in Math that covers a variety of non-traditional topics such as apportionment theory. set theory, probability, and personal finance. Some years, our most advanced students work their way through MIT open courseware offerings in Multivariable Calculus or Linear Algebra.
Responsibilities include preparation and teaching of four regular math courses. Math courses might include any combination of courses, including an AP course if the candidate has experience in that curriculum. Additional duties include serving as a student advisor, assisting with student activities, and active participation in admissions and development events.
Successful candidates will have a minimum of 3 years teaching experience at the high school level, a deep knowledge of the subject matter, and familiarity with student-centered approaches to teaching. A masters degree and teaching credential are preferred. We seek teachers who are committed to using multiple modalities and perspectives to help students achieve understanding, and who are committed to reflection on their pedagogy as a vital part of their professional development. In addition, we are looking for genuine colleagues - thoughtful, energetic, passionate teachers and all-around "school people" who want to participate in and contribute to our vibrant community. A love of high school students, flexibility, and a sense of humor are required.
