Sidwell Friends School, an independent co-educational Quaker day school with campuses in Washington, DC and Bethesda, MD, seeks a Middle School Library Assistant. The Assistant is responsible for supporting the Middle School Librarian with all operations of the Middle School Library, including helping students and faculty find the information they need, creating a welcoming atmosphere, maintaining the library catalog, processing book acquisitions, maintaining circulation records, sending out overdue notices, and conducting inventory.
The Library Assistant will support the Librarian with a variety of duties including classifying and cataloging new materials (books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, videos) based on their content and purpose, using MARC standards and including data related to SFS MS curriculum needs, as well as physically processing and preparing for circulation all new materials including books, DVDs, magazines, etc. The ideal candidate will have the ability to engage students and teachers in friendly dialog to ascertain their information needs and to present the library as a warm and friendly place to be. They must also possess well-honed problem solving skills in order to help students and teachers find the needed information.
This 10 month, full-time position begins August 2017.
A bachelor’s degree is required. Course work in education, library science, child development and /or children’s literature preferred. Experience working in a school setting is also preferred. This position also requires the ability to lift and move stacks of books, squatting and/or kneeling to shelve or retrieve books on low shelves, utilizing a stool to retrieve books on higher shelves and the ability to push heavy book carts across the library.
