The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a dynamic and innovative teacher of Mandarin / Chinese beginning in the fall of 2017. Candidates should have experience teaching Mandarin to English-speaking students at the secondary or college level, or in a Chinese immersion program. Applicants must be able to teach at all levels (I through IV A.P.) of the Mandarin curriculum, to take a leading role in the development of our cross-curricular Asian Studies programs, to introduce students to Chinese culture, and to work with departmental colleagues in consistently honing and reshaping the curriculum. The goals of the Mandarin program are to build towards a full immersion classroom experience for students in the higher levels, to teach advanced writing skills using simplified characters, and to promote a global perspective among the students. Candidates should also be interested in and prepared to provide significant cultural information about China.
Full-time teachers are responsible for four classes, each with up to 17 students. Candidates should also be prepared to spend additional periods getting to know and to help students outside of the classroom. In addition to their classroom responsibilities, College Prep teachers take a share of other departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities. The salary is competitive.
