La Jolla Country Day School is seeking an extraordinary Middle School English Teacher. This individual will be responsible for teaching English to Middle School students, as well as serving as an advisor to approximately 20 students. The teacher will report to the Head of Middle School and English department chair, and join a highly collaborative, innovative, and experienced faculty.
The position will have primary responsibility for teaching Middle School English. Essential duties will include:
Daily Classroom instruction;
Ongoing communication and conference with parents;
Advising and mentoring groups of students;
Conferencing with students and colleagues as required;
Active participation in the curricular improvement of the department; and
Willingness to initiate or participate in the Outdoor Education Program with students.
Provides instruction in varying group sizes and individually in the area of English and Literature
Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
Develops lesson plans and instructional materials as part of planned learning experiences to motivate pupils
Evaluates pupil academic and social growth, keeps accurate records, prepares progress reports and communicates with parents on individual pupil progress
Creates, with assistance from pupils, a functional and attractive environment for learning through using displays, bulletin boards and learning centers and assumes responsibility for proper care and use of equipment
Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the school and/or self-selected professional growth activities
Completes all reports as required, including student evaluation, orders, program evaluation and lesson plans
Interprets the educational program to parents and other community members through personal conferences, meetings and various media
Attends faculty meetings, in-service meetings, team meetings, grade level meetings or department meetings as required
Administers and scores such tests as may be required by the school
Performs basic attendance accounting as required
Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day as required
Shares in sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees
Performs other duties of an adjunct nature, which are necessary to smooth operation of the school as needed
Maintains active participation in the work of the department on curriculum development, vision and pedagogy
The candidate must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree. Prior history or teaching experience at the Middle School Level is expected; preference will be given to candidates with experience at independent schools.
