6th Grade Science Teacher (& Possible Department Head Role)
BFS has an opening for a 6th Grade Science Teacher (and possible K-12 Science Department Head). This position entails being a 6th grade student advisor and either teaching four 6th grade science classes or three 6th grade science classes and serving as K-12 Science Department Head.
This position requires a science teacher who is capable of, and comfortable with, teaching students of a diverse range of backgrounds and ability levels. As the department’s needs change according to the student population, course assignments may change from year to year. The ideal candidate will have a commensurate amount of science and/or science education coursework in several areas of science and the ability to teach in two or more areas of the discipline. Candidates must have experience teaching a laboratory science course. A Master’s degree in a lab science or in science education is required. A working understanding of Science Inquiry methods will allow the candidate to fit the science instruction model that is currently in place at BFS. A comfort level with current classroom wi-fi internet technology is expected.
In potential Department Head candidates, we seek department leadership or other academic administrative role experience and/or experience in curriculum design, mentoring, and observation of teachers. Exposure to IB curriculum is a plus. The K-12 science department is composed of approximately 10 science teachers.
All Brooklyn Friends teachers are expected to be active community members, sharing supervisory duties and general support and care of the school community. Advisory responsibilities include overseeing students' progress in all classes, being the primary contact with parents, and other responsibilities such as participating in overnight trips, teaching our anti-bias curriculum, and leading service learning activities.
