The Dean of Residential Life reports directly to the Director of Residential Life and is responsible for visionary leadership, staff selection, training, and supervision, and development of residential life programs. The Dean of Residential Life is a full-time, twelve-month, staff position. The Dean is expected to live on campus and be a visible member of the school community. San Domenico School has approximately 120 students living on campus together with another six members of the residential staff. Other members of the residential staff live off-campus.
Responsibilities of a Dean of Resident Life:
Develop and implement policies and procedures for the Residential Program and keep all handbooks associated with program up-to-date;
Develop goals and strategies to accomplish the mission of the Residential Program in collaboration with residential staff and Director of Residential Life.
Develop Residential Life curriculum, which includes all activities associated with the Residential Program.
Assist in developing and supervising budgeting process, allocating resources according to specific needs in the Residential Program.
Recruit, hire, train, and supervise residential staff. Responsible for scheduling staff and accounting for shift hours of staff.
Develop and strengthen relationships with campus partners who support the every-day operations of Residence Life facilities (Health Services, Food Services, Maintenance, Upper School faculty, Librarian, Athletic Director, Conservatory and Virtuoso Staff).
Post and maintain calendars for residential life activities.
Supervise the all residential life staff and student prefects.
Plan and preside over weekly staff meetings.
Oversee budget for Residential Life Program.
In partnership with the Dean of Students and Director of Residential Life, develop and implement policies, procedures, and documentation for disciplinary responses for boarding students.
In partnership with the Campus Security, develop, implement and enforce safety and security procedures, facilitating appropriate responses to any type of emergency situation involving residents.
Monitor fire safety compliance, facilitating the planning and conducting of fire drills in coordination with appropriate staff.
Maintain personal certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as well as that of all residential staff.
Training and Mentoring
Develop training all residence staff with the goal of fostering a strong living-learning community as well as developing and inspiring each person’s greatest potential.
Develop positive working relationships with residential staff through regular (weekly) meetings and personal mentoring in order to develop each individual’s potential in their leadership role.
Assess performance of residential staff, periodically and annually, and keep them informed of strength areas and growth areas.
Assess physical and structural needs of residence halls and apartments, and advocate for resources to address these needs with the assistance of the Director of Residential Life and Chief Financial Officer.
Inspect major maintenance problems and determine severity, ensuring that appropriate follow-up occurs by necessary campus staff.
Provide leadership and vision in the overall philosophy of education in the residential staff, ensuring living and learning environments conducive to the holistic growth and development of students as well as the promotion student learning.
Work with Upper School Counselor and Director of Health Services to provide for emotional and physical well-being of student residents.
In partnership with residential staff, assist residents experiencing crisis situations.
Maintain communication with parents of boarding students.
In partnership with residential staff, assist in resolving various student conflicts, including roommate and peer conflicts.
Perform dorm duty approximately 20 hours per week as well as being on-call
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to perform this job.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in education or a closely related field.
Progressively higher levels of administrative and supervisory experience.
Management and administrative organizational abilities.
Understanding of the critical development issues facing adolescents.
Ability to speak in front of large groups.
Experience in managing and resolving conflict.
Strong writing skills.
Previous Residence Life experience preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and social skills.
Must be able to relate to a diversity of ages (from adults/ parents to incoming late adolescent students), as well as individuals from a diversity of cultures and economic backgrounds.
Ability to keep calm in stressful or crisis situations.
Ability to multi-task.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Ability to maintain enthusiasm and a sense of humor
