Mackintosh Academy, a co-educational independent school serving gifted students in K through 8th, is seeking a Science Specialist Teacher for the 2017–2018 academic year. We seek a candidate who values the balance of intellectually challenging and creative program with developmentally appropriate and research-based practices. This lead specialist teacher would be responsible for teaching in a fully equipped lab, working collaboratively with a Homeroom and Specialist Teachers to implement an academically strong, child-centered and differentiated science curriculum to gifted children. This position is a combination of important roles: homeroom partner for 7th or 8th grade, science specialist teacher for grades 6-8th and possibly 4-5th as well, and curriculum catalyst for campus-wide innovations.
Coordinates IB planning and implementation (PYP and MYP related) via a highly collaborative relationship with other grade-levels, specialist teachers, and curriculum coordinators. Design project-based learning experiences that are integrated into existing curricula and in support of the Next Generation Science Standards.
Helps students build scientific understanding through direct hands-on experience and investigation. The science curriculum is designed to build foundational science skills and foster an early love for the processes of inquiry and discovery. Class units of study focus on experimentation, observation, data analysis, and research.
Implements a variety of instructional and assessment methods including integrated use of educational technology, design-thinking, experiential education, and project-based learning.
Facilitates the social and emotional development of the students. Key components of our daily life include: morning meetings, class meetings, service and leadership opportunities, class and school-wide agreements, rituals, routines, and all-school gatherings.
Supports the creation of an ecoliteracy curriculum and coordinates campus-wide gardening, composting and recycling efforts.
Maintains and equips our science labs for K-8th students. This is an exciting time in the school life to take a leadership role in shaping the future of both innovative/instructional spaces.
Maintains solid frequent and effective communication with home, colleagues and administration.
Participates in staff meetings, retreats, and on various committees.
Supports the overall mission of Mackintosh Academy.
Candidates should have a Bachelor’s Degree in science or science education and preferably a Master’s Degree. Minimum of 3-5 years middle school teaching experience essential, and elementary science teaching experience preferred. Evidence of related passions and experiences and demonstrated success in creating programs such as robotics, science contests, or interest in sharing programs in related areas with students, a plus. Knowledge of gifted children is a plus.
Additional Salary Information: Commensurate with years of experience and level of education.
