Full-Time, 10 month, Exempt, Housing Included
Sandy Spring Friends School seeks energetic professionals to apply for the position of Dorm Staff and is eager to consider applications from traditionally underrepresented groups. This position works closely with the Director and Assistant Director of Residential Life, as well as the Activities Coordinator, to oversee and improve the lives of sixty boarders in a co-ed dormitory. He/she will be a crucial collaborator in the process of updating and expanding the school’s Boarding Program. This position supervises dorm students during several shifts per week, including weekday afternoons, evenings, and weekends. He/she will oversee and interact dynamically with students in the dorm; suggest, create, and participate in dorm activities; communicate with families and school personnel as needed; manage discipline and safety issues; and administer medications and first aid, among other duties. A necessary trait is the desire to have fun with the students, even when not officially on duty, and to actively pursue ways to influence them positively, not just “hang out” with them.
Candidates must have the ability and willingness to work both weekdays and weekends, though sufficient “off time” will be provided and respected. Candidates should also expect to be available on non-school days when the dormitory is open, including some school vacations, as well as to participate in all-school or all-dorm activities. Seeking other opportunities on campus is permissible if those duties do not interfere with dorm obligations. This position reports directly to the Director of Residential Life and has no supervisory responsibilities over staff. Housing is provided and a willingness to live in a dorm apartment is expected.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree preferred and current CPR certification a plus. The ideal candidate will have three or more years of experience in a boarding-school environment (as a student or employee), excellent written and interpersonal communications skills, and experience overseeing teenagers. Given our international boarding population, the ability to speak a language other than English, especially Mandarin, is a plus. Possessing a valid driver’s license and confirmed insurability through our carrier to drive school vehicles is also required, as is a willingness to obtain a CDL (commercial driver’s license). Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, is required. Ideal candidates will also embrace professional development, be willing to develop new initiatives as needs arise, value diversity, and support Quaker beliefs, values, and practices.
Physical Requirements: Daily desk work including extensive amounts of computer time, ability to navigate stairs, mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement, bending and squatting, and lifting/carrying boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
Sandy Spring Friends School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or a person's status as a qualified candidate with a disability in administration of its educational program, admission policies, financial aid program, staff hiring and other school-administered programs.
