Carolina Day School is a Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade college preparatory secular day school in Asheville, NC. The school has been in existence since 1987, when Asheville Country Day School merged with St. Genevieve’s Gibbons Hall. The school has a 23-acre main campus and a 30-acre athletic complex about three miles from the main campus. There are 655 students in four divisions, including the Key School for dyslexic learners.
The school has an $18 million operating budget and a $4.7 million endowment. As a result of the school’s strategic plan, a $5 million capital campaign, a Lower School renovation project, and construction of a new library were complete in 2016. The school is currently planning for the next construction project that will include a new Upper School building.
Responsibilities of the CFO
CDS is seeking a Chief Financial Officer who will report to the Head of School and work consistently and collaboratively with the Head and the senior administrative team. The CFO will also work closely with the Head and Board of Trustees to ensure the annual operating budget is balanced, while executing a plan for maintaining the long-term financial stability of the school. The CFO’s responsibilities will include the following:
Keep an accurate, continuous record of cash and the financial position of the school and manage the financial operations of the school so that it remains financially stable;
Oversee the proper maintenance of the school’s campus assets;
Maintain systems for finalizing faculty and staff contracts, act as a member of the financial aid committee, and serve on the enrollment management team;
Supervise the Director of Human Resources, Facilities Manager, Director of Academic and Summer Programs, Director of Technology, and business office staff;
Prepare accurate and timely operating statements for the Head of School and the Board;
Execute a plan and schedule for the preparation of the annual budget that will permit the setting of the succeeding year’s tuition;
Manage an annual audit of the school’s financial records and prepare the annual IRS Form 990;
Oversee purchasing, investments, banking activities, payroll, and benefits;
Work with the Head of School to manage risk at the school; ensure the safety of personnel and students in their use of the facilities and maintaining insurance to protect the property and cover the liability of the school;
Assist the Head of School and the senior administrative team with decisions regarding salaries and benefits for all personnel, including the evaluation of support staff.

At least five years of experience with finances and planning budgets, ideally in an independent school or educational setting.
Significant management experience in a challenging and fast-paced work environment that requires versatility, resourcefulness, and an ability to manage uncertainty.
Experience maintaining and enhancing new administrative systems and campus infrastructure.
Independent school experience is preferred but not required, and candidates should be prepared to speak to how their experiences have ignited their commitment to and excitement for the mission of Carolina Day School.
