The purpose of this job is to teach middle school oratory and debate classes, serve as the head coach for the Pegasus debate team, work with teachers PK-8 on various events and curriculum that involve public speaking, and incorporate public speaking within a rich cross-disciplinary and project-based learning environment.
Examples of Essential Functions:
Develop a curriculum that fosters an innovative mindset while encouraging trainings on how to craft and organize different speech types (story, oratory, extemporaneous, impromptu speeches) as well as adaptation of messages to the audience.
Develop a curriculum that includes leadership elements so students will learn how to organize and run meetings, practice organizational, facilitation, and listening skills.
Incorporate language and speaking skills into the curriculum, including, but not limited to Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication, Intercultural Communication, and Argumentation/Debate for grades 6-8.
Ensure students understand components of speech writing, researching topics to present both sides of an argument, awareness of relevant topics in society, and formal presentation.
Review and evaluate the public speaking elements across grade levels (PreK - 8) to ensure continuity. Collaborate with PreK-8 teachers on various in-class activities and events that incorporate public speaking. Curriculum map specific public speaking experiences across the Pre-K-8 continuum.
Demonstrated knowledge of fundamentals of the Middle School Public Debate Program, as well as advanced techniques of Speech and Debate.
Teach, enforce, advocate, and model appropriate behavior, character traits, and educational values to team members.
Excellent communication, team-building, and organization skills.
Lead teacher responsibilities for speech and debate.
Attend (chaperone, judge, coach) weekend tournaments throughout the school year.
Attend (chaperone, judge, coach) any travel tournaments throughout the school year.
Attend all league coaches meetings.
Coordinate all logistics related to debate tournaments, including assigning debate teams, preparing students, arranging parent volunteers, securing judges, and communicating information about tournaments to students and parents.
Be available to meet as well as correspond with students for debate work outside of class, including reviewing of students’ debate arguments..
Participate and provide supervision for all speech and debate activities, including practices, meetings, tournaments, on-campus events, and middle school workshops.
Convey a positive image of the Pegasus School at all times when working with students, parents, employees and the public.

Required – Employee should have a teaching credential and Bachelor’s degree, ideally in English, communication studies, social studies, and/or organizational communication. Experience working with both large and small groups of students, delivering knowledge of the best practices of public speaking.
Desirable – Five or more years teaching experience teaching English, Social Studies, Public Speaking, and/or debate; Master’s degree in English, social studies, communication studies, organizational communication or similar field.
Committed to the highest intellectual, artistic, and ethical standards, excellent interpersonal communication skills, a knowledge and lively interest in pedagogy, and the ability to collaborate with all members of the community, especially other grade level teachers. Ability to design, plan, develop, implement and evaluate curriculum and its effectiveness in the classroom. Knowledge related to current speech practices, types, language and speaking skills. Possess effective communication both orally and in writing, and meet schedules and timelines.
