The Upper School Counselor supports the social and emotional health of students in grades 9-12. Under the supervision of the Head of Upper School, the Upper School Counselor serves a key role in creating and sustaining an atmosphere of emotional wellness among students by forming a family-school-community partnership. The Upper School Counselor works closely with the Upper School Administrative team, the Lower and Middle School Counselor, the faculty, and the School Nurse.
The Upper School Counselor must be energetic, enthusiastic, and optimistic about adolescents and their families. A strength of an ideal candidate is the ability to create and sustain relationships with all the constituencies in our community that is built on trust. Duties and responsibilities include:
Design, plan, implement, and participate in programming that fosters a culture of wellness in the Upper School;
Provide short term, solution-focused support for students through individual and group counseling; and when appropriate, assist families to arrange outside therapy and support services as needed and then coordinate with outside providers working with students;
Meet regularly with the Upper School Leadership team, and school nurse to review the health and wellness of our student population and collaborate with educational staff to determine whether intervention strategies are effective; and
Participate in regular professional development opportunities in order to stay updated on national trends and developments in providing support to adolescents; and host workshops and presentations for parents and in-service programs for teachers and staff as requested.
Candidates must have a minimum of three years experience working closely with adolescents and teens, preferably in a school setting. Candidates must have experience working with a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, learning abilities, socioeconomic status, language and nationality. Experience with teaching and public speaking is required. An advanced degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, School Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or Applied Psychology is required. Appropriate license, certification, and/or other documentation attesting to the candidate’s expertise in counseling is required.
