Reporting directly to the Head of School and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) will partner with senior staff and Board to develop a fully integrated advancement effort for Lawrence Academy. He/she will be responsible for overall strategy, design, and coordination of philanthropy and engagement for the school. The CAO will manage and integrate development and engagement teams, which includes annual fund, campaign and leadership giving; parent giving and engagement, alumni giving and engagement; and cultivation of other key constituents. The CAO will also play a lead role in advancement strategy and execution at the board level and will maintain a small portfolio of key prospects.
The successful candidate will be a strategic leader who is visionary about Lawrence Academy’s institutional reach and fundraising potential and who will inspire the entrepreneurial and creative initiatives needed to maximize results and broaden the number and nature of relationships across the school community at all levels. The CAO will have proven competency in annual giving, constituent relations, and major and planned giving, with a particular emphasis on growing alumni engagement. Experience with campaign design and implementation is also important.
The candidate will present with outstanding leadership and management competencies and the ability to partner and work well with a Board of Trustees, senior colleagues across the school, staff at a variety of levels, and other volunteers. The CAO will be an experienced, talented fundraiser and relationship builder looking for a position where innovation is encouraged and growth is necessary.
Design and implement a long-term advancement structure and plan to significantly enhance philanthropic giving and engaged alumni.
Strong collaboration with the Head of School and Board of Trustees to promote a culture of support and broadened relationship among all constituencies of Lawrence Academy.
Oversight, design, and direction of all aspects of philanthropy and engagement including campaign execution, major gifts, annual fund, alumni giving, parent giving, and operations.
Provide strong direction, management, and mentorship for the advancement team.
Ensure effective, useful, and thoughtful enhancements of systems, analytics, processes, and measurements to monitor, project, and guide engagement activities and fundraising results.
Manage a small portfolio of key prospects.
Demonstrated leadership in designing and shaping a philanthropic culture and program with success indicated by giving growth, parent and alumni participation, and effective volunteers.
Ten to fifteen years of advancement experience highly preferred.
Significant experience in an independent school environment highly preferred.
Campaign experience highly preferred.
Successful front-line experience with the cultivation and solicitation of leadership gifts.
Experience partnering with board, senior management and volunteer leadership.
Excellent interpersonal skills with a passion for creating relationships.
Demonstrated ability to develop staff to next levels of achievement in their professions.
An understanding and enthusiasm for education and Lawrence Academy’s mission.
Demonstrated track record of setting and executing a fundraising strategy. Ability to hold the department as a whole to high standards of achievement for giving and relationship building.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on the ability to persuade and influence others around ideas, decisions, and financial support.
Lawrence Academy, serving almost 400 students in Groton, Massachusetts, is a residential and day school, and faculty are fully involved in the curricular, co-curricular (primarily athletics), and extracurricular programs at the school. Interested candidates should expect to live in a dormitory, but on-campus (non-dorm) or off-campus housing might be an available alternative. All members of the faculty are part of our residential program and have regular weeknight duties and some weekend duties.
