Mackintosh Academy, a co-educational independent school serving gifted students in grades K through 8th, is seeking a Physical Education (PE) Teacher for the 2017–2018 academic year. We seek a candidate who values the balance of intellectually challenging and creative program with developmentally appropriate and research-based practices. Our excellent student-teacher ratios allow for individualized instruction and education of the whole child. This specialist teacher would be responsible for working collaboratively with other specialists and homeroom teachers to implement a physically and social/emotionally strong, child-centered and differentiated curriculum to gifted children. Coordinates PE curriculum planning and implementation via a highly collaborative relationship with all grade-levels, specialist teachers, and curriculum coordinators. The program emphasizes an experiential approach to physical education through a balance of: physical activity, cooperation/participation over competition, development of motor skills, lifetime fitness activities, and delivery of a diverse program that helps students develop skills in a broad-range of sports and activities.
This position does not require a coaching commitment, but the willingness to provide afterschool enrichment classes/sports would be a benefit and would result in additional pay.
Facilitates the social and emotional development of the students. Key components for PE classes would be: class agreements, rituals and routines, class meetings, and leadership opportunities. The successful candidate will have the ability to tailor the curriculum to students with a variety of talents and interests.
Responsible for facilitating and maintaining PE materials/equipment for formal and informal use.
Maintains solid frequent and effective communication with home, colleagues and administration.
Participates in staff meetings, retreats, and on various committees.
The ideal candidate will have previous PE teaching experience, understand the benefits of an independent elementary and middle school education, and be able to inspire others about Mackintosh’s mission, program, culture and community.
BA required, Master’s degree preferred
Two years teaching experience preferred, with an emphasis in physical education.
Understanding of child development and experience working with a range of needs and abilities; interest in creating curriculum that balances socio-emotional, cognitive, and physical development.
A growth mindset, active sense of humor, warm personality, strong classroom management, communication and organizational skills.
Knowledge and experience with gifted children is a plus.
