Miss Porter’s School seeks a Director of Music for the 2017-2018 school year to lead a dynamic program grounded in the mission of our all-girls independent day and boarding school.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of experience as a music teacher or performing arts administrator at a secondary school and/or college. As the leader of the entire music program, the ideal candidate will have proven administrative success within school and/or artistic communities. Bachelor’s degree in related field required, Master’s degree preferred.
In addition to enjoying the teaching of female adolescents, the ideal candidate is collegial, approachable, and patient. S/he also stays current on developmental opportunities for student musicians and music teachers. S/he will possess excellent organizational abilities, outstanding written, and verbal communication skills.
The ideal candidate is a visionary. S/he will be comfortable and informed speaking to students, parents, colleagues, and alumnae about the music program as well as at large public events.
The director will provide hands-on leadership, administrative direction, and oversight for all aspects of the music program. S/he must interact with an array of people on campus and learn systems and routines quickly. The Director of Music is responsible for the effective and supportive supervision of the accompanist and the instructors of music lessons and courses. The director is responsible for the hiring of instructors of music lessons, scheduling lessons for students, supervising the coordination of musical events, and managing facilities. The director is responsible for preparing and managing the department budget, ensuring cost effective and fiscally responsible funding of all performance groups, supplies, and maintenance and repair of pianos and other music equipment. S/he works with Admission to communicate with, interview, and audition prospective students.
The Director oversees the smooth implementation of all musical performances and events such as at Reunion Weekend, Family Weekend, Convocations, and Graduation. The Director also plans the annual Fritzinger Concert. In addition, the Director must be knowledgeable of the CMEA Regional and All State Festivals as well as other music festivals and performance opportunities, ensuring compliance with each of these programs.

This is a ten-month faculty position that includes nights, weekends, on-call availability, light travel, conferences, mentoring, and public speaking. In addition, the Director of Music teaches in the afternoon program and Intermission, attends all department and faculty meetings, attends all required school events, advises a small group of students, serves on a Weekend Duty Team, attends sit-down dinner, and holds a student transportation van licenses.
