Houston Academy is a premier independent, college preparatory school located in Dothan, AL. Houston Academy is searching for an Upper School English teacher (beginning in the 2017-18 school year) to teach Upper School English and serve as English Department Chair.
Teach 4 Upper School English courses
Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction
Keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences
Select and obtain materials and supplies such as textbooks and electronic media
Attend professional development opportunities,
Participate in campus and community events
Sponsor extracurricular activities
Department Chair reports to the Head of Upper School and the Head of Middle School. He/she is responsible for the activities and basic functioning of the department. The job of the Department Chair is:
To articulate the department's strategies in achieving the mission and goals of the school and to set departmental objectives, assessments, and policies in cooperation with the members of the department.
To participate productively as a member of the Academic Council in order to ensure academic integration of the schools and to exchange information and ideas regarding the total school program.
To serve as a role model to encourage faculty self-evaluation, professional growth, scholarship, and effective training.
To oversee departmental curriculum and to suggest recommendations for correcting overlaps/gaps.
To convey information to members of the department regarding plans, curriculum development and assessment, resources, facilities, and activities that affect department members.
To hold regularly scheduled department meetings, to maintain records of such meetings, and to provide minutes of the meetings to the division heads and Headmaster.
To be aware of and coordinate the teaching objectives, materials, methods to be used, and means of assessment used by each teacher within the department, and to maintain records relating to standardized test scores and course grades in department courses.
To work with the Head of Upper School and Head of Middle School to evaluate continuously the performance of each teacher in the department, culminating in an annual evaluation conference, with performance assessments shared and goals set.
To publicize within the school community the scholarship and endeavors of the department and give recognition to exceptional achievement within the department.
To review periodically the library collection pertaining to the specific department and to recommend to the librarian titles and materials for possible acquisition.
To assist in the search for an evaluation of candidates to fill vacancies within the department.
To submit each spring listings for textbooks, to prepare an annual departmental budget that allows for the on-going purchase of additional texts, supplies, and equipment, and to administer the budget in cooperation with the Head of Upper School, Head of Middle School, and the Business Manager.
To perform other duties as assigned by the Heads of School and the Headmaster.

The ideal applicant will possess the following:
A master’s degree, preferably in English or measurable mastery of the subject area
Strong leadership skills
Experience teaching and/or a willingness to teach Advanced Placement Literature and Composition and/or Advanced Placement English Language
A strong commitment to students and their learning.
The personality traits of enthusiasm, creativity, imagination, and a strong desire/ability to collaborate across content areas
An inspiring, innovative, and charismatic teaching style

Houston Academy is a co-educational day school for three-year-old preschool through twelfth grade. The school was founded to fill the community’s need for a college preparatory school to serve the Dothan area and surrounding communities. The nineteen-acre campus is located in one of Dothan's finest residential areas. Located in the southeast corner of Alabama, Dothan is a progressive community of approximately 67,000, with nearly 160,000 people in the metropolitan area. It offers cultural and recreational activities as well as a two major medical centers, a community college, a four-year university, and a school of osteopathic medicine.
The campus, which was renovated in 1995, features four modern buildings connected by covered walkways. Included in the facilities are forty-five classrooms; two daycare rooms; library; Lower School science lab; Upper School labs for chemistry, biology, physical science, and Middle School science; state of the art Lower and Upper School art rooms; Lower and Upper School computer labs; two gymnasiums; a classroom for music and band; and a cafetorium. In 2002, the Dove Center was completed. It houses the Upper School English department, a computer lab, a computer classroom, art room, yearbook room, and the library. The school also maintains two playgrounds with one having a young children’s gazebo and the other newly renovated in 2005 with a covered area; along with a practice football field, and a practice baseball field. In 2013, a state-of-the art student activities center was built. Varsity games are played at a nearby community recreational center with some of the finest facilities in the Southeast.
In December of 2012, Houston Academy became a “MacBook School,” issuing MacBook Pros to all students in grades 5-12. Students in the lower grades have access to interactive smart board technology, as well as iPads. In addition, all teachers are issued MacBooks, and teachers teaching grades K5-4 are issued iPads.
Enrollment is currently 640 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten/3 through 12. Enrollment has been slightly higher in pre-2009 years but has remained stable over the past several years.
The Strategic Plan has created a separate Middle School (grades 5-8), and plans are currently in the works to build a Fine and Performing Arts center.
