The Chief Operating Officer works in collaboration with the president and senior management team to ensure NAIS is mission-focused, vision-driven, customer-centric, nimble, and flexible, in order to grow and develop to meet ever-changing membership needs. He/she manages the major internal office functions to ensure that NAIS can deliver measurable, cost-effective results that make the vision a reality by creating efficient and effective systems to increase the productivity of the organization and maximize the strengths of its employees.

Working in partnership with the president, translates the organization’s vision into a strategic business plan and establishes processes, procedures, and evaluative measures to ensure the vision is enabled.
Serves as the operational leader for the organization by:
Organizing the development of the annual NAIS business plan.
Working with the CFO to ensure the annual budget supports the business plan and emerging opportunities.
Leading the talent management program, supervising the HR director in developing and carrying out a program that ensures an engaged and highly-productive staff.
Ensuring that organizational capacity exists to fulfill NAIS's mission, priorities, and goals.
Providing a strong day-to-day leadership presence for all staff and bridging internal operations with external advocacy.
Ensuring that teams work cross-functionally so that all work is carefully integrated to ensure the highest quality.
Leads and manages the organization’s vice presidents who have the following responsibilities: professional and leadership development, equity and justice initiatives, membership and community engagement, and other programmatic units as assigned by the president.
Designs and manages a process through which the Leadership Team stays abreast of trends affecting the industry and the association, and ensures that services and products address those trends. Ensures that all aspects of the organization (structure, processes, policies) support the goal of highly satisfied and engaged customers.
Designs and manages feedback loops within the organization and between the industry and organization to ensure that products and services throughout the association are continuously improved using data and feedback from internal and external users.
Sets goals for the work of the Leadership Team and develops agendas for both Leadership and All Staff meetings to ensure excellent communication throughout the organization and coordination of all goals and objectives.
Serves as the organizational ombudsmen, available to assist staff in solving organizational issues. Advises the president on serious personnel issues.
Supports the board in the president’s absence; co-chairs the Environment Committee of the board.
Assuming other responsibilities, as assigned.
Master’s degree preferred
A minimum of ten years of management experience

Knowledge of independent schools (preferred)
