The Rashi School, the Boston area’s Reform Jewish independent school serving students in grades K–8, seeks a part-time Grade 8 Language Arts Teacher starting August 2017. Rashi is distinguished by exceptional academics, a strong sense of community, and a deep commitment to Jewish learning and social justice. The Middle School Language Arts Curriculum develops students’ reading and writing skills, focusing on close reading of texts, reasoning, use of evidence, and the foundational skills of effective writing. In addition to teaching engaging, challenging, and student-centered classes, Language Arts teachers provide frequent opportunities for students to write analytically, reflectively, and creatively, and offer timely and meaningful feedback. Additionally, Language Arts teachers provide instruction so that students have a rich and varied knowledge of vocabulary and attain a thorough knowledge of correct grammar usage. In class discussions, Language Arts teachers foster an environment where students actively engage with their own and their peers’ ideas and questions in a thoughtful, academic, and respectful manner.
Teaching two sections of 8th grade language arts, four days a week.
Meeting with the Head of Upper School and Middle School Learning Specialist weekly
Collaborating with the other Middle School humanities teachers.
Collaborating with the Theatre Specialist on a production of Macbeth
Communicating regularly with parents either by e-mail, phone, or in person as needed.
Writing report cards twice a year and writing high school letters of recommendation.
Participating in Middle School Back-to-School Night and two full days of parent-teacher conferences.
Attending weekly faculty meetings on Wednesday afternoons.
Participating in other aspects of school life as determined by the Head of Upper School.
Successful candidates will have an undergraduate or advanced degree in English and 3-5 years of experience teaching middle and/or high school language arts. A passion for literature and an outstanding ability to inspire and challenge students are essential.
