North Shore Country Day School, a JK-12 independent school near Chicago, seeks a dynamic, full-time Middle and Upper School Computer Science teacher for the 2017-2018 Academic Year. While a bachelor’s degree is required, a master’s degree is preferred. North Shore is eager to consider applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in independent school communities.
We believe that computer science should not just be about programming. This newly created position offers the opportunity to further the school's goal of giving students the thinking skills and background to understand and be producers of and with technology rather than just consumers. We seek candidates who combine technical mastery with the ability to provide excellent teaching to students with a wide variety of previous experiences in the discipline.
Computer Science was established last year in the Middle School and is a course all students take for a trimester each year in 6th through 8th grades. Building off of their Lower School experience, students currently take a survey course in 6th grade, a robotics course in 7th grade, and a web design course in 8th grade.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach two of the Middle School courses and all courses needed by the Upper School. The successful candidate will also need to contribute to the school community by being a Middle or Upper school advisor and by also supporting North Shore's co-curricular program. Ideal candidates will be believers and cultivators of the ‘growth mindset,’ excellent written and oral communicators, collaborative and valued colleagues, and life-long learners who are committed to ongoing professional development.
Candidates are asked to submit a cover letter specific to the role at North Shore Country Day School, a resume, a written statement detailing their philosophy/approach to their work, and a listing of professional references (it is helpful to know the context in which the reference worked with the candidate and have both email and phone contact information for each reference). All information should be submitted to electronically to email@example.com
North Shore offers competitive salaries that are commensurate with experience. Additionally, North Shore provides an excellent employee benefits program, including health and retirement benefits, tuition support for children’s attendance at North Shore, and professional development funding to support summer study, attendance at conferences/workshops, travel, and advanced degree work.
