Mary McDowell Friends School (MMFS) is one of New York City’s leading schools for students with learning disabilities. We first opened our doors in 1984 when a group of parents, special education professionals, and community members came together to meet the needs of elementary age children with learning disabilities in Brooklyn and lower Manhattan. Our first class began with just five students, and today we have 383 students in kindergarten through 12th grade in three buildings.
About the Position
We are seeking a skilled, highly organized, hardworking custodian to support our school located in Brooklyn, NY. The ideal candidate is reliable, responsible, and cares about the work s/he does. You will work as part of a team of five incredibly dedicated custodians in a school which takes pride in its school buildings and puts a great emphasis on community. Under general supervision, the custodial engineer is responsible for the physical operation, maintenance, repair, custodial upkeep and care of a independent school building and its immediate grounds; heat building by means of low pressure boilers; maintain HVAC equipment; make minor repairs to heating equipment, electrical equipment, plumbing, structure, glazing and furniture; are responsible for the cleaning of the building and grounds; maintain the building and grounds in a safe, secure and sanitary condition; conduct inspections of building to determine needed repairs; consult with and advise facilities directors on problems of operation, maintenance and repairs; set up custodial work schedule to ensure maximum efficiency and minimum interference with classroom activities; maintain records and prepare required reports of school operations; are responsible for interior maintenance painting of school building; and other ad hoc tasks as assigned.
Some of the physical activities performed by our custodial engineers and environmental conditions experienced are: working in confined areas, outdoors in all kinds of weather, on the roof of the building, and in the physical plant, including the boiler room and heating and ventilating room; walking up and down stairs; climbing up and down ladders; working in close proximity to bio-hazardous materials, such as asbestos and infectious waste.
- Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in building operation and/or maintenance; or
- Graduation from an accredited trade school with a minimum of 185 classroom hours and 35 field hours in a related field (e.g., HVAC, boiler operation, skilled trades, etc.); or
- Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a building cleaner; and possession of
The FDNY Certificate of Fitness (S95)
- The ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, with the broader MMFS community; candidates must be able to understand and be understood in English
- Strong attention to detail; time management skills are essential
- Certifications- Fire Drill Coordinator (F07), Fire Guard (F01), OSHA 10, PA Safety Person Certificates of Fitness (F03 and F04).
- Experience using stripping and buffing machines are a plus.
Certifications are not required upon hire, but candidate must be willing to obtain certification(s) within the first year of employment.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position working Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; this position requires occasional weekend work with advanced notice.
