Castilleja School offers an innovative, inclusive and diverse Fitness curriculum to prepare our students for lifelong engagement in physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. The Fitness teacher reports to the Department Chair and works closely with other Fitness teachers, with the grade level team, and collaborates with the Wellness department. The Fitness teacher is responsible for planning, developing, and teaching units of study, following an existing curriculum and departmental policies. The teacher will also collaborate with grade level colleagues to craft interdisciplinary student experiences.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Collaborates with department colleagues, grade level colleagues, and department head to deliver a program that is consistent with school-wide expectations and standards
Organizes, plans, and implements Fitness units
Understands sequential progression and scope and sequence in subject area
Gives timely, meaningful, and personal feedback on student performance and participation
Creates a safe and inclusive classroom environment
Incorporates appropriate and varied methods, materials, and technologies into teaching
Incorporates topics appropriate to the developmental needs and the age of students
Stresses effective oral and written communication in all classes and encourages careful listening skills
Supports curriculum development at the school through committee participation
Understands and is compassionate to adolescent realities, especially those related to girls
Treats students equitably, is sincerely interested in them as individuals, and responds to their needs
Engages and encourages students in the active process of learning
Holds students accountable for their actions and their learning
Holds high expectations for all students and communicates these expectations clearly and regularly
Actively engages in the life of the school in roles such as student advisor, elective teacher, club mentor, etc.
Continues professional development in both subject matter and methodology
Responds to evaluations from supervisors and students professionally and constructively
B.A. or B.S. in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or equivalent experience
Prior teaching experience is required
Committed to academic excellence, interdisciplinary learning, exceptional teaching, and providing a dynamic climate for lifelong fitness and wellness
Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development in both subject matter and methodology
Background in Social Emotional Learning, and familiarity with advisory system preferable
Ability to pass state and federal background check, fingerprinting, and provide a recent negative TB test or screening.
